General Biology
Cross-cutting Modules for Year 1 (OLD)

Welcome to General Biology (AG80273).
This module introduces you to the fundamental principles of life across plants, animals, microorganisms, and genetic systems. You will explore how biological structures support function, how organisms interact with their environments, and how genetic inheritance shapes biological diversity.

Through lectures, laboratory investigations, microscopy, dissections, field tasks, and problem‑solving activities, you will build scientific thinking skills and practical competencies that support advanced studies in agriculture, life sciences, and environmental management.

 Module Aim:

To provide students with foundational knowledge and laboratory skills in botany, zoology & entomology, genetics, and microbiology, enabling them to understand biological diversity, apply scientific reasoning, and conduct basic biological investigations relevant to agricultural and life sciences.

By the end of the module, the student will be able to

1.     Explain fundamental biological structures and processes across plants, animals, microbes, and genetic systems to build a foundational understanding.

2.     Experiment with microscopy, staining, dissections, and microbial techniques to generate accurate biological observations.

3.     Distinguish major taxonomic groups using anatomical and morphological traits to support accurate identification.

4.     Compare structure–function relationships in cells, tissues, and organisms to interpret biological adaptations.

5.     Develop simple biological models based on genetic principles and inheritance patterns to predict biological outcomes
