1.Welcome message
Dear students, welcome to CH90142: Applied Organic Chemistry.
I am pleased to have you in this course and look forward to a productive learning experience.
This course will connect organic chemistry concepts to real-world applications in various fields.
Your active participation, critical thinking, and consistency will be essential for success.
Please follow course updates regularly and do not hesitate to ask questions when needed.
I wish you a successful and rewarding learning journey.
2. The module aim
This module aims to equip students with competencies relevant to industrial applications of natural products, including their extraction, fractionation, and characterization. It further examines the principles of organic chemistry underlying the design and use of pharmaceuticals, as well as the synthesis and properties of polymers such as plastics and rubber.
3. Intended learning outcomes
At the end of this module you should be able to:
- Analyze the structure, properties, and reactivity of organic compounds relevant to industrial and natural product applications.
- Apply appropriate techniques for the extraction, fractionation, and characterization of natural products.
- Evaluate the chemical principles underlying the design, synthesis, and function of pharmaceuticals and polymeric materials such as plastics and rubber.
- Demonstrate the ability to relate organic chemistry concepts to real-world applications in industry, health, and environmental contexts.
