SMS1311: Introduction to Law
Trimester 3

This module aims at introducing the student in the field of Law by explaining the principles of Law, different domains of Law, social and labaor law, administrative and constitutional law. It allows to understand the role of rule of law in the society and the establishment of social order and conflict resolution  with law means.

SMS1312: Introduction to Political Science

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF AIMS AND CONTENT

 This course aims at defining political science and its subject matter. It develops the methods of political science and makes the difference between it and other social subjects. It analyses the main political systems and actors and gives some basic knowledge on international politics mainly through its nature and role in development.

This module aims at introducing students to the key concepts, theories and practices of leadership. Develop leadership skills of students. Develop the ability of leading in different working environment. Help students to analyse the actions of leaders in the context. Develop a sense of professional ethics. SMS3212 Principles of Meteorology
Trimester 2

This module covers the basic concepts of atmosphere, the concepts, structure, and components of ecosystems in different climates. It also provides the students with the important knowledge to under and the basic climatic phenomena that are generally involved in the atmospheric circulation, as well ad how different effects in pur surrounding atmosphere are effectively measured.

SMS4211 Natural Hazards and Disaster Management
Trimester 2

This module aims to provide students with knowledge and skills concerning basic natural and anthropogenic hazards that leads to disasters. It equips students with knowledge on possible disaster management or monitoring approaches.  The course will help them; to understand the concepts of hazard assessment, elements at disaster risk mapping, and vulnerability assessment; to formulate the spatial data requirements for disasters; to apply various methods for vulnerability assessment; to understand the requirements for relief /response / recovery / reconstruction initiatives or operations.

On successful completion of the module, the student will be expected to be able :
  • Describe natural and anthropogenic hazards, their origins, triggering factors, and characteristics;
  • Illustrate the types of Natural hazard and how they affect human settlements;
  • Conduct Vulnerability and risk assessment
SN80441: Neurology and its relevance to Special Needs Education
Semester 2

The Module aims at helping students to understand the structures of the nervous system and how it influences behavior, learning and development of individuals. Students will be able to understand the difference between the main functions of the central and peripheral nervous system and the different stages of perception formation. Students will also develop strategies to deal with the identified learning needs attributed to neurological dysfunction and analyse the role of environment in neurological dysfunction. 

SN80541: Community Based Support Strategies for Inclusive Education
Trimester 2

The aim of this module is to enable students to gain a clear understanding of Community Based Rehabilitation concepts.  It describes how these services can support people with and without disabilities to have equal opportunities in Inclusive Education as well as inclusive society and development . It specifically explores and promotes  the use of locally available means, resources, and it discusses the latent synergy between the community inputs and the education sector, that needs to be continuously tapped for the development of inclusion of learners with disabilities and special needs.

 

SNE1242: Educational Need of Learners with Disabilities
Trimester 2

This module aims at equipping students with knowledge, skills and attitudes about concepts, contexts, and categories of special learning needs. The module will enable students to be creative, help appropriately learners with special education needs by emphasizing identification and assessment of learning needs. The module will empower students with alternative learning and teaching strategies to face challenges caused by learners with disabilities and special learning needs. They will also be able to identify communication needs of learners with special educational needs, e.g Braille, Tactile, and Sign Language in the teaching processes.

SNE2141: Teaching Braille and using Tactile Materials
Trimester 1

Upon the completion of the module, students should be equipped with Braille knowledge and skills; give a brief history of the development of the Braille; Name and use different types of equipment used in writing for learners with visual impairment: Braille, typewriters, computers, hand frames. Teaching English Braille and mathematics Braille. 

SNE2242: Assessment and intervention strategies for Learners with SEN
Trimester 2

This module aims at equip trainee educators wit knowledge and skills to conduct diagnostically establishing identifications, weaknesses (limitations and/or challenges) strengths for learners with special educational needs (SEN) for appropriate educational interventions and placement.

It is an important strategy educators who must establish educational motivations, create learning opportunities, provide appropriate support to their students, with the inputs of multidisciplinary team of stakeholders that include parents, professionals or any other stakeholder. 

It is the initial procedure that enables recording, reporting assessment result and intervention programs, monitor them and evaluate the development of the child with Special Educational Needs.

SNE3243: Teaching&Interpreting Rwandan Sign Language
Trimester 2

The present module focuses on sign language skills development for educators, with particular attention on the Rwandan Deaf cultural contexts. It is a practical module, and at the completion of the module, students should be equipped with knowledge, skills and attitudes related to Rwandan Sign Language structures and functions; Deaf culture, Deaf identity and Deaf communities in Rwanda and elsewhere; teaching deaf learners, communication and inclusion of the Deaf in Rwandan schools.
