Agricultural Value Chains Management (AVCM).

Course taught to Year Four Students in Agricultural Economics Class.

It is both theoretical and practical oriented, industry based learning model done to enhance the knowledge and skills of the learners with regard to adding value for an agricultural commodity.

It is a component taught as part of the larger module entitled: Agribusiness Management for 45 Hours (30 Hrs Theory + 15 Practical).

Background and Development in Special Needs Education
Trimester 1

Special Needs Education Provisions module seeks to lead the students to the background historical experiences that have guided the development of Special Needs Education towards Inclusive education. At the completion of the module, students should be equipped with knowledge related to the historical experiences of SNE development and trends towards Inclusive Education (IE); Special, ordinary, integrated and inclusive education and their development trends through history in Rwanda; East Africa and Western world; The national & international movements of PWD’s; Alternative learning and teaching opportunities in situations where disabilities and other SENs challenge the process; Development of alternative services and resource provision for people with Disabilities and other SEN’s in education and communities.

The module intends to expose students to proper definition of Bank assets and liabilities, and risks associated in management of bank liabilities. The aim of Bank asset and liability management is to provide focused, practical understanding of all key methodologies employed in Bank Asset and liability Management. The module will cover major approaches to the measurement and management of structural risk and hedging techniques

Basic Accounting (MGT1232)
Trimester 2

This module introduces to the students about the role and significance of accounting information and the fundamentals and  basic accounting procedures, accounting principles, accounting concepts, assumptions and conventions, accounting cycle, which are involved in the production of a business entity’s financial statements and enabling the students to understand the basic language of the business, accounting as a science in addition to gain knowledge of recording of business transactions, measurement of business performance and the assessment of financial position of the organizations.

Basics of Crop production
Trimester 1

At the end of the module, students would possess in depth knowledge and skills as related to the basics of crop production including plant physiology, appropriate farming practices for diverse food and cash crops, plant pest and diseases as well as appropriate control and management measures. In additions students will acquire knowledge and skills of integrating trees for achieving sustainable crop productions.

BCT4262 Building Information Modeling (BIM)
Semester II

This course covers Building Information Modeling (BIM), including its use and application for small and large-scale building construction projects. Students will learn terminology associated with buildings, the theory and evolution of BIM, and how to develop BIM models using Autodesk Revit. This course will also cover selected topics on how BIM is used to help prepare or feed into key project items, such as cost estimation, structural, MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) architectural renderings, interfererence checking, and modeling of energy consumption.

This module is  designed for  year 2 students, Forestry and Nature Conservation Department and is composed of a number of components: introduction to principles of forestry, introduction to biodiversity conservation, introduction to ecology and Dendrology. It intends to  introduce students to some of the principles in Forestry management, life diversification, biodiversity and it environment, tree species classification, etc.

Semester 1

The present module aims at equipping students with an understanding of fungi and plants characteristics both morphological and reproductive. Moreover, deep understanding of classification, nomenclature, ecology and economic importance of some plants and fungi will be enhanced.

The module covers the general concepts related to plants and fungi. In addition, principles of plants classification and of different groups of plants and fungi. Also, the strategies of teaching and learning fungi and plant diversity will be emphasized.

BI80364: Animal Physiology
Semester I

This module of Animal Physiology is designed for the second-year biology students in the Conservation Biology and Biotechnology programs at the Department of Biology, College of Science and Technology, University of Rwanda. This module aims to equip the students with both knowledge and understanding of animal tissues, organs, apparatus/systems, and their functions. Students will be exposed to different literature (theories) on the anatomy and functioning of animal systems and conduct laboratory practices for a better understanding of the concepts learnt in class. By the end of the module, students are expected to be able to conduct an independent literature search on an assigned animal physiology-related topic, summarize it, and present a formal PPT presentation to the audience and answer questions.

The course aims to provide an advanced appreciation of molecular genetics and enable candidates to understand the basics of Bioinformatics.  The course begins by revising Biomolecules, DNA replication and the genetic code before introducing biological data, sequence alignment, Biomolecule structure prediction and Phylogenetic analysis. The course is concluded by looking into emerging areas where Bioinformatics is applied

Trimester 2

In this module, students will learn what big data is and will explore how big data changes the way IT interacts with the rest of the organization, cutting across business units and functions to create new value, and how it can have a huge impact on business results in order to enhance a company’s level of performance. Also, this module will discuss the different trends and benefits of social media in the new era of business management.

BIO 2163 Quantitative and Population Genetics
Semester I

The module aims at providing to students knowledge about basic quantitative and population genetic concepts, quantitative traits, quantitative traits and normal distribution, methods of selection and crossing for the improvement of animal and crops production, the Hardy-Weinberg Principle, the calculation of allelic frequencies in a given population, and genetic counselling and Eugenics.

BIO1243: Plant Diversity, Structure and Function
Trimester 2

With this course, students will enhance their understanding pertained to the diversity that exists in plants.

They will also improve their understanding on plant anatomy as well as physiology. To achieve its learning outcomes and develop attributes of a University student, both hands on and minds on activities through critical thinking and problem solving strategies will be provided.

Further, field study will be done particularly on the part of plant diversity.
