Dear Student, welcome to the COMPETITION AND CONSUMER PROTECTION LAW CLASS
The course Competition and Consumer Protection Law aims at introducing students to the rules, sources, organs and enforcement of Competition and Consumer Protection in Rwandan and in General.
The Course is structured into various chapters and Topics to enable the student to cover all aspects of the Competition and Consumer Protection Law.
Various resources will be used and students activities and assignments shall be used in the assessment of the student's knowledge of the course.
Topic 1 covers The aim and purpose of Competition Law, Topic 2 covers Prohibited Practices, their effects and exemptions under Rwandan Competition Law, Topic 3 covers The aim and purpose of Consumer Protection Law while lastly Topic 4 covers Consumer’s and Seller’s rights and obligations, and remedies under Rwandan Consumer Protection Law.
Law nº36/2012 of 21/09/2012 relating to competition and consumer protection, Official Gazette nº 46 of 12/11/2012 shall be the key material for the course but various other course materials shall be used for deeper analysis and diversification.
This module introduces the concepts, skills and techniques of legal drafting with an emphasis on essential skills such as writing with clarity and precision, conforming to statutes and ordinances, using form-books appropriately, achieving goals of clients, identifying and eliminating ambiguity, editing and simplifying complex thoughts and ideas
This module has two Units : Legislative drafting and pleading techniques. The module examines the techniques for drafting laws and other legal documents in general. It particularly equips students with court submissions and judgement writing skills as well the techniques for pleading cases before Courts of Law or other competent bodies such as arbitration tribunals.

This module equips students with skills on how to handle family related issues out of court . Students will understand the notion of "Family" under Rwandan context, and the Family Mediation itself. Thus, we'll discuss various types of mediation; family mediator's qualities and techniques; mediation relevance and its whole process.
This module is an Introduction to Legal philosophy. it aims at understanding the legal doctrines and the legal reasoning at the root of rule of law and legal systems in which laws function. Welcome to the Module of Family Law!
The Module of Family Law aims to introduce the students to the complex legal rules governing persons and family with a view to guiding them on how to develop independent and critical thinking, and the ability to formulate legal arguments and solve legal issues related to persons and family. It therefore provide students with a critical and comprehensive appreciation of the main features of Rwandan law governing persons and family.
It has two components: the First component treats the essential legal aspects of the person from birth until death. It first precises the notion of legal personality, how it begins and ends and what it entails. It also examines how persons can be individualized, identified or distinguished from others, and studies the status and capacity of a person from a legal perspective. The Second component of the Family Law Module studies the person as a member of the family. It examines family relationship aspects namely kinship and alliance and their legal impacts. It analyses the marriage contract, its conditions of validity and legal consequences, its dissolution by divorce and legal separation and their legal consequences. The second component lastly explores legitimate filiation and establishment of filiation for children born out of wedlock and attached legal consequences.
This module is known as Constitutional Law and Political Institutions but most of the time we shorten it as “Constitutional Law”. It is a module of 15 credits all together and will normally be taught in about one month. The general prerequisites for this module are the basic general knowledge on the theory of constitutionalism in general; we talk about Constitutional Law in countries such as United Kingdom, France and United States of America.
Aim of the Module
General Criminal Law Module aims at introducing students with the and principles rules applicable to all crimes in general. It covers subjects such as the principle of legality, elements of the crime, criminal liability, defenses, inchoate offences and sentencing. The assessment of this module consists of formative assessment (50% ) and summative assessment (50% for a final exam). E-tivities, Assignments, quizes and final exams and will assess the knowledge, different skills ( communication and analytical skills) and personal qualities.

This module is composed of three components namely Criminology, Sociology of Law and Psychology and Law. Each Component is taught by a separate lecturer in a complementary way since the components were put together to their common goals.
At the end of this module:
ü Students should be able to differentiate criminology from other criminal sciences. They should also know main doctrines of criminology, criminality factors and the contribution of victimology to the improvement of apprehension of criminal phenomena.
ü Students should be able to know the influence of the culture on law and vice-versa. They should as well be able to analyse economical, social, political and cultural problems that affect changes and evolution of law.
ü Students should be introduced on the intervention of psychology and law in the legal processes. They should as well be introduced to the broad area of legal psychology to give them an appreciation of the application of psychological principles and methods to the legal system.
ü Students will also learn how psychologists are employed in and interact with the legal system.

This module aims at helping students to know and understand the different aspects of Rwandan Law dealing with property in general and land in particular. With this module, students will be able to identify the different types of property, the modes of their acquisition and loss as well as the rights of people over such property. The property law unit will help students to grab all these aspects with particular focus on land given its central socio-economic importance in Rwanda.
The aim of this module is to equip students with a knowledge and understanding of principles and rules of Rwandan Contract Law, to make students aware of the core elements of a contract and to provide a comprehensive foundation for the study of other legal modules where a knowledge of contract law is necessary or desirable. Amongst other things, this module will examine how contracts are created and made enforceable, the classification of contract terms, the rules regarding the legality and enforceability of contract terms as well as the manner in which contracts may be enforced and/or terminated.
The purpose of this Module is to build onto the knowledge and skills that students acquired from General Principles of Criminal Law, by applying the principles of criminal liability to selected specific offences such as murder (intentionally causing the death of another person) and manslaughter (negligently causing the death of another person).

In the process of learning you will need to have the Law governing contracts and your course materials of the general principles of law of contracts. By the end of this module, learners should be able to - Understand the basic principles of law of contracts; - Analyze and understand different specific contracts set out by the statutes; - Gain an understanding of the legislation that regulates specific contracts, - Understand principle guiding unnamed contract (study and drafting) The module comprises the following units: - Sale and Exchange Contracts, - Lease contract, - Loan contract, - Deposit contract, - Mandate contract, - Pledge and Suretyship, and compromise agreement (transaction)
This course introduces the student to Principles, rights and obligations of different actors in the labor market and procedures governing their actions. The course is divided into two major parts; Individual Labor relating, and, Collective Labor Relations. With the use of the current Law governing Labor in Rwanda, various implementing Orders, Case law both domestic and International, and articles, the course takes the student into all issues surrounding Rwandan Labor Law to equip him/her with necessary practical understanding of the field. The Course is assessed through group assignments and a written examination.
The aim of this module is to imparts to students the knowledge of the law applicable in situations of armed conflicts. It furthermore brings learners to critically think and analyse case-laws and treaties relating to this field. It equips learners with problem-solving solution skills to help them to handle legal cases it the aforementioned field. This module covers the international legal and institutional frameworks relevant to regulate situations of armed conflicts.
