Semester I

This module introduces the concepts, components, and applications of Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) the framework that facilitates the discovery, access, sharing, and use of spatial data across organizations and users. Participants will explore how SDIs integrate geospatial data, standards, policies, technologies, and human resources to support effective decision-making in government, industry, and research. The course emphasizes metadata, data catalogs, data repositories, and web services, as well as best practices for interoperability, data quality, and spatial data governance. Students will gain practical skills in leveraging SDI for planning, environmental management, disaster risk reduction, and geospatial analysis.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the concept, importance, and components of SDI.

  • Differentiate between SDI elements such as data repositories, catalogs, standards, and policies.

  • Analyze how SDI supports decision-making in governance, environment, and development.

  • Apply SDI principles for data discovery, sharing, and integration.

  • Evaluate challenges and strategies for building effective SDIs.
