AR80565: Building Elements and Detailing
Semester I

Welcome to this module.

Building Elements and Detailing.  This course focuses on the component parts of a building.  Starting with the idea of basic shelter, it boldly explores how different building elements fulfil basic human functional needs, adapt to different climates, and create spaces of beauty and meaning.  Included in this are elements such as roof; walls and enclosure; apertures for light, view and air; floors and ceilings; staircases and ramps; doorways and thresholds.  In parallel, the course looks at the pragmatics of structure, daylighting and ventilation. and the more abstract notions of enclosure, protection and tradition, aiming to gain an understanding of how simple functional elements can be combined to create wonderful architecture.
