Welcome to the Environmental Geography (GE80441) module. This course explores the Earth as an integrated system and examines the complex relationships between humans and the natural environment. It places strong emphasis on sustainability and environmental stewardship, equipping learners with the knowledge and skills needed to understand, analyze, and respond to contemporary environmental challenges at both global and national levels.

Aims of the Module
The module aims to:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of key concepts in environmental geography and ecology.
  • Explain the structure and functioning of ecosystems, including energy flow and biogeochemical cycles.
  • Analyze the distribution and characteristics of major global biomes and their environmental determinants.
  • Examine the causes, impacts, and forms of environmental degradation.
  • Explore strategies for environmental management and protection at local, national, and global scales.
  • Enhance critical thinking, research capacity, and environmental problem-solving skills.
  • Promote responsible citizenship and sustainable development practices, with a focus on Rwanda.

Brief Indicative Content of the Module
The module covers foundational concepts and terminology in environmental geography and ecology, followed by ecosystem structure and functioning, including energy flow, food chains, and biogeochemical cycles. It then explores the global distribution and characteristics of major biomes and the factors influencing them. The course further examines environmental degradation, including its causes, types, and impacts such as pollution and biodiversity loss. It also addresses environmental management and protection strategies, emphasizing sustainable practices and international frameworks guided by the United Nations. Finally, the module contextualizes these topics within Rwanda, focusing on national environmental challenges, policies, and pathways toward sustainable development
