Brief description of aims and content

This module provides an overview of security as an inter-disciplinary subject. It presents the historical development of the subject and the central theoretical perspectives - covering both mainstream theories and the various critiques against mainstream perspectives. SES6211: Public Security and Rule of Law
Semester 2

This module of Public Security and Rule of Law focuses on understanding some philosophical and practical perspectives on public security and rule of law. Starting with definitions, and the relationship between the two concepts (public security and rule of law), students will proceed to learn the role of national and international legal systems, aspects of human rights and accountability and transparency in contributing to maintaining both public security and rule of law. 

SES6213: COMMAND, LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
Semester 2

. Brief description of aims and content

This module provides an overview of command, leadership and management as an interdisciplinary subject. It critically analyses different theories and strategies and their evolution. It covers mainstream theories and strategies as well as their various critiques against historical mainstream perspectives. The focus will be how to apply the acquired knowledge and skills in different operational appointments as well as creating positive impacts to those one leads, commands and manage.

Learning outcomes  

Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  1. The roles, functions and responsibility of leadership, command and management to effectively employ them in their various appointments at the operational level.
  2. Different theories, approaches and strategies to leadership, command and management and their ethics 
  3. Critically assess challenges in leadership, command and management - including applying ICT (computer) skills in research, explanation, presentation, communication and dissemination of data
  4. Develop knowledge and skills in essay writing, debate key concepts and issues in this field. 

Main Objective:

To improve both formative and practice of LCM since the three matters for the success of any mission in security sector.

SES6312: POLICY AND STRATEGY
Semester 2

Brief description of aims and content

At the end of the module, students should demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between policy, strategy and national security, all of which constitute part of the mandate of modern states. The content of the module will address issues of policy formulation and analysis, thinking and acting strategically in national security matters, and the role of the State as a national and international actors.

SES6313: CONFLICT MANAGEMENT AND RESOLUTION
Semester 3

Brief description of aims and content

This module introduces students to systematic understanding of conflict management, including conflict analysis, mapping and transformation. It emphasizes contextual analysis and takes into consideration factors such as relationship dynamics and interrelation of factors influencing conflicts and peaceful interventions.  It also introduces students to the major theories in the field and provides them with an understanding of the main intervention approaches.

Welcome to Spatial data infrastructure module. It introduces students  at implementing a framework of geographic data, metadata, users and tools that are interactively connected in order to use spatial data in an efficient and flexible way.

SGE3164: Cadastre and Land Administration I

The purpose of this course is to introduce the concept of land administration and draw attention to the benefits that the society can reap from a good land administration. The module contains cadastre description, land registration and land administration.

By the End of the module learners should be able to:

This course introduces the concept and foundation of laws, then focuses on specific legal provisions relevant to surveying and geomatics engineering. By the end of the module learner should be able to:

  3. Adhere to contract laws, environmental law, planning provisions and land law of Rwanda.

Brief Description

This module is a continuation of land use planning I . it seeks to deepen student understanding of spatial data and spatial analysis in land use planning especially in urban set up. It will give students a basis to apply the skills and techniques learned to logistical and practical problems of cities and regions, including land use allocation and suitability assessment, landscape assessment and the impacts of urban growth. As a foundation for the applied issues to be addressed during the course, students will be familiarized with some basic planning concepts concerning land use, land development, infrastructural and landscape planning. Students are also expected to learn how to prioritize needs and work efficiently in a professional context, problem solving and communication skills through in-class discussions, on-line forum discussions and presentations.

The course expands the scope of cadastre and land management. It is closely  related to GIS database and spacial data infrastructure. Legal issues regarding cadastre data sharing will also seen. Case study will also be presented to make learners  have a clear understanding of the subject.

    The course introduces the concepts behind smart grids and future low-carbon networks. It introduces the concepts behind sustainable electricity systems as well as the main renewable and low-carbon generation technologies. Provide tools and techniques so that distributed low carbon technologies (e.g., distributed renewable generation, electric vehicles, electro-thermal technologies, etc.) may be integrated effectively into the power system in the context of both traditional grids and future smart grids.

    On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

    • Present the fundamental concepts associated with Smart Grids
    • Explain the smart grid’s structure and function
    • Explain the ICT technologies for smart grid
    • Review renewable energy generation, grid integration of renewable energy system and energy storage technologies
